the AI Era: Clean Data Will Prove to Be Your Most Valuable Asset

A quiet revolution is underway in business, and most people haven’t noticed it yet. It’s not about automation. It’s not even about artificial intelligence. It’s about something more foundational: clean, well-structured data, and what happens when anyone in your organization can query, model, and apply it instantly using natural language.

Until now, data analytics was a rarefied domain. It required technical expertise, special tools, and a deep understanding of statistical and modeling frameworks. You needed data scientists, SQL writers, or PhDs to answer complex questions. That era is ending.

With the rise of large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 and its successors, anyone in your organization with business understanding and curiosity becomes a data scientist—if your data is clean.

To demonstrate this point, I set out to build a working, data-driven model using public information, rather than relying on legacy business intelligence tools, but with the aid of GPT-4 and a conversational interface. The test: to model and analyze one of the most complicated and politically charged planning challenges in the Pacific Northwest. The region’s power future.

I chose this domain because I spent 20 years in the power industry. I know the data, terms, and planning culture, but this exercise is not about energy; it’s about what’s possible when the data is clean and accessible, and the tools are capable of interpreting it in real time.

Test Case: Modeling the Northwest’s Power Supply Crisis

Over the next decade, the Pacific Northwest is expected to experience a fundamental shift in energy demand. With aggressive decarbonization goals, widespread electrification (vehicles, buildings, industry), and an influx of energy-hungry data centers, electricity demand is expected to increase by 2,000 to 4,000 average megawatts (aMW) by 2036.

That’s not a hypothetical. That’s based on the work of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council (NWPCC), the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), and the integrated resource plans (IRPs) of major regional utilities like PGE and NW Natural.

These plans, white papers, and modeling assumptions are public, but historically, they’ve been difficult to digest, let alone simulate.

We used GPT-4 to ingest these documents and simulate:

  • Load growth scenarios through 2036
  • Supply shortfalls under climate-constrained hydro conditions
  • Monte Carlo simulations of 1,000 scenarios for each year from 2026 to 2036
  • Peak demand risks in late summer (September) and winter (December)
  • The effect of adding clean firm capacity (batteries, long-duration storage, nuclear, etc.)

What emerged was a highly visual, data-rich set of insights showing that even in average conditions, the Northwest will begin facing significant seasonal shortfalls by the early 2030s.

To put this in perspective: A modern gas peaker plant can deliver around 200–300 megawatts. A new small modular reactor (SMR) delivers around 470 megawatts. To close a 4,000 aMW gap, the region would need to build the equivalent of:

  • 15–20 gas plants, or
  • 8–10 SMRs, or
  • Deploy a mix of demand-side management, long-duration storage, firm renewables, and transmission buildout

This kind of strategic modeling used to take weeks. It now takes minutes.

Real Lesson: It’s Not About Energy, It’s About Access

This exercise didn’t just produce pretty charts. It surfaced deep planning insights:

  • September is emerging as a critical risk month, where low hydro, high air conditioning loads, and wildfire risk converge
  • Data centers alone could drive 1,000–3,000 aMW of new load by 2030, often in geographically constrained areas
  • The region’s transmission system is fully subscribed, meaning even if clean power exists, it may not reach the loads.

But more important than the energy conclusions was the meta-conclusion; clean, structured data and modern AI models, business-level analysis is now possible in real time, by anyone with the right question.

We are seeing the future of business. And it’s why clean internal data will become your company’s most valuable asset.

One Conversation: Complex PDFs to Live Modeling

To be clear, we didn’t build a software platform or hire data engineers. We:

  • Uploaded PDFs of planning documents
  • Instructed the model how to handle key variables (e.g. load, hydro, renewables)
  • Asked scenario-based questions (“What happens if Snake River dams are breached?”)
  • Ran simulations using Python code generated by GPT-4
  • Visualized the outcomes in real-time charts

What used to require a dedicated planning team can now be done by an operator, an analyst, or a CFO, with the right data and a trusted model.

The implications are enormous. Any business with complex operations, inventory, logistics, scheduling, and customer segmentation can now model futures, test assumptions, and challenge decisions using tools like GPT-4.

However, there’s a catch: dirty, inconsistent data can ruin the opportunity.

That’s why companies must begin treating their internal data like a first-class product:

  • Structured, centralized, well-documented
  • Aligned with natural language interfaces
  • Governed by humans who understand both the business and the data structure

We didn’t do this to cut headcount. We did it to showcase what’s now possible and to empower teams to ask better questions, build smarter plans, and become data-fluent in their work.

Just like electricity powered the First Industrial Revolution, clean, accessible business data will power the AI-driven transformation of this decade.

The winners won’t just be the ones who adopt AI. They’ll be the ones who build clean data foundations their teams can access and learn from. The companies that see this now—and act—will find themselves running faster and farther than they ever imagined.
